RGI Grid Awards - Good Practice of the Year - WINNERS of the Communications & Engagement Award (2023)

On Tuesday 28th of November 2023, in an event in Brussels we won the ‘Communication & Engagement’ RGI Grid Award. The jury, the Renewable Grid Initiative and the European Commision valued our bottom-up approach to projects, which places communities at the heart of everything we do from the get-go, by engaging them and elaborating solutions in unison.

Environmental Engineering and Science Prize - Institution of Civil Engineers, UK

Best Paper in Journal (2019)

In an award ceremony that took place in London, UK in October 2019 we were awarded the ‘Best Paper in Journal’ prize for our paper titled “Sustainable decentralised wastewater treatment schemes in the context of Lobitos, Peru” published in the Journal of Environmental Engineering and Science Volume 13, Issue 1, January 2018.

Michael Alderson, one of our co-founders was awarded this prize for the work carried out at EcoSwell.

Pride of Newcastle Inaugural Alumni Achievement Awards - Newcastle University

Winner for International Impact (2018)

Michael Alderson, EcoSwell co-founder was awarded this prize in recognition of his work on sustainable development. He has also been listed as one of the university's inspirational alumni.

International Conferences

Yale university oceans and climate conference 2020

Yale University’s Oceans and Climate Conference, USA - 2020

Our Director of Outreach and International Operations, Michael Alderson, was invited to Yale University’s Oceans and Climate Conference in 2020 to present how applicable marine natural carbon solutions can be developed and implemented. The presentation was called “The Challenges of Conserving Blue Carbon Coastal Ecosystems in High Risk Areas of the Global South”.

Congreso Internacional de Sustentabilidad IBERO- Universidad Iberoamericana, Mexico - 2020

In February 2020, co-founder Alejandro Pizarro, was invited to be a keynote speaker in Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico City for the International Sustainability Congress Ibero. In his presentation, Alejandro explained the EcoSwell experience, walking students through the path we took in our organizations development and the challenges we had to overcome along the way.

Eco-I -Innovation for Clean and Sustainable Growth - Lancaster University, UK - 2019

Eco-I 2019 brought together academia, industry and policy makers to share how together they can drive eco-innovation to solve key global challenges across the themes of energy, water, food security, waste, resource efficiency and natural capital. Our co-founder, Diego Almendrades, together with our partner Dr. Lai Bun Lok from Lancaster University presented the results from the Geophysical investigations of groundwater for rural community-use in Lobitos carried out earlier that year.

International Student Energy Summit (SES2019)- Imperial College, UK - 2019

Our co-founder, Andres Bustamante, was invited to speak in Imperial College London at the SES2019 in a panel discussion on “The Power of the Technology-Driven Leapfrogging” with other global energy industry leaders. It was a fascinating discussion around the opportunities and challenges for developing countries to bypass fossil fuels and and jump straight into renewable energy as their main energy source.

Frontiers of Development Symposium - Rio de Janeiro, Brazil - 2018

EcoSwell was invited by the Royal Academy of Engineering to participate in a symposium that brought together industry professionals and researchers from all over the world in order to forge partnerships to take action in tackling some of the most pressing global challenges. Our co-founder, Diego Almendrades, attended and was able to secure a partnership with Dr. Lai Bun Lok from Lancaster University, which has resulted in exciting research projects.

Grants

FrontiErs of Development - FRONTIERS CHAMPIONS (2020-21)

The Frontiers Champions funding provides small grants so that Champions can undertake community-building activities. During 2021 we will be launching a series of networking events to build global networks focusing on restoring Peru’s drylands.

Columbus Zoo & Aquarium (2019-20)

In order for us to continue delivering the successful results achieved from the first grant awarded in 2017/18, the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium awarded us a follow-on grant to expand our reforestation and ecosystem restoration efforts in the drylands of northern Peru.

FrontiErs of Development - Seed Funding (2018-19)

Jointly with our partners from Lancaster University we received Seed Funding through the Global Challenges Research Fund (GCRF) for groundwater research in a dry gully just north of Lobitos.

Columbus Zoo & Aquarium (2017-18)

As part of their Fund for Conservation that seeks to help endangered species and their critical habitats, the Columbus Zoo & Aquarium (Ohio, USA) awarded us a grant for our project “Green Lobitos - A Sanctuary for the Peruvian Plantcutter”.

Johnson Ohana Foundation (2017)

We were awarded a small grant by the foundation of famous US singer/songwriter Jack Johnson to implement a reforestation site in the Dry Forest Ecosystem of Lobitos as part of his 2017 Fall Tour in Latin America.
